Clearwater, Coastal city in Pinellas County, Florida.
Clearwater is a coastal city in Pinellas County, Florida, situated along the Gulf of Mexico and known for its white sand beaches. Palm trees line the waterfront streets, and low-rise buildings mix with shops and restaurants that spread over several kilometers along the shore.
The Tocobaga people lived in the region for centuries before European settlers arrived and officially founded the city in 1891. When Pinellas County split from Hillsborough County in 1912, the city took on the role of county seat.
The name stems from freshwater springs that once bubbled up near the shore, giving the water a clean appearance that early settlers noticed immediately. Today, residents gather at Coachman Park along the harbor during weekends, watching boats and enjoying outdoor concerts on the grass.
A free trolley system connects major points across the city, making it easier for visitors to move between the beach, downtown, and the harbor. The beaches remain accessible year-round, though spring and autumn offer more comfortable temperatures than the hot summer months.
Several freshwater springs continue to bubble beneath the ocean surface offshore, contributing to the water's unusual clarity. These underground sources gave the city its name and still influence the quality of the local waters today.
