Dixieland Historic District, Historic residential district in Lakeland, Florida.
Dixieland Historic District is a residential neighborhood in Lakeland with around 556 buildings spread across a large area bounded by Walnut Street, Florida Avenue, Lake Hunter, Hartsell Avenue and Belvedere Street. The homes represent different building styles from various periods that reflect changing tastes in residential design.
The area was founded in 1907 by Henry B. Carter and C.W. Deen as a suburb south of downtown Lakeland and had a water system by 1910. The neighborhood experienced significant growth in the following decades as it became an established residential community.
The neighborhood displays Mediterranean Revival, Craftsman, and Colonial Revival architecture from the early to mid-20th century. As you walk through the streets, you can see how these different building styles sit side by side and shape the character of the area.
Visitors can explore the neighborhood on foot, with walking tours offering the best way to observe different architectural styles and details of the older homes. The area is flat and easy to navigate, making a leisurely stroll through the residential streets accessible to most people.
Early 1900s newspapers marketed the area as a fashionable suburban retreat, which sparked major population growth during the 1920s and 1940s. This historical marketing push shaped how the neighborhood developed and what it looks like today.
