Devil's Den, Archaeological site in Williston, Florida, US
The Devil's Den contains a cavernous sinkhole with stalactite formations and clear waters, reaching depths of 54 feet with constant temperatures of 72 degrees.
The site holds numerous fossils dating back to 75,000 BCE, including early hominid remains and extinct animal species such as saber-toothed cats and mastodons.
The location received its name when early settlers observed steam rising from the cave's chimney during cold mornings, creating supernatural interpretations of the phenomenon.
Visitors need masks, snorkels, and fins to explore the waters, with equipment available for rent on-site and camping facilities offering tent sites and cabins.
The geological formation resulted from a karst window where carbonate bedrock erosion created a sinkhole, revealing an underground river system beneath Florida's surface.
