Aventura, Planned suburban city in Miami-Dade County, United States
Aventura is a city in Miami-Dade County in northeastern Florida, with residential neighborhoods, shopping centers, and waterfront properties along the Intracoastal Waterway. Streets follow a regular grid pattern, while parks and golf courses are nestled between housing blocks.
The area began growing as a planned residential development called Turnberry in the early 1970s and officially incorporated as a city on November 7, 1995. Developers built condominiums, shopping centers, and recreational facilities systematically on previously undeveloped land.
The name translates to "adventure" from Spanish, and many street signs appear in multiple languages to reflect the international makeup of residents. Local parks and public spaces often host events that bring together families from different backgrounds.
The city sits about 15 miles (24 kilometers) north of Miami and provides access to major highways that make travel to Fort Lauderdale and downtown Miami straightforward. Visitors find ample parking in most commercial and residential areas.
The local shopping center ranks among the largest retail spaces in the United States and attracts shoppers from across South Florida and beyond. The site also houses an art museum within the shopping center that displays contemporary installations.
