Hallandale Beach, Coastal city in Broward County, Florida, United States.
Hallandale Beach sits between Miami and Fort Lauderdale along the Atlantic Ocean, covering about 4.55 square miles of residential neighborhoods and sandy shoreline. The built environment shifts from high-rise apartment buildings near the coast to lower structures inland, crisscrossed by several wide thoroughfares.
Swedish farmers founded the settlement in 1895, and Luther Halland, who ran a trading post for the Florida East Coast Railroad, gave it its name. The community grew into a popular destination for horse racing in the early 20th century when Gulfstream Park opened in 1939.
During the winter months, the population swells with visitors from Quebec, reflected in the presence of Canadian businesses and bilingual signage throughout the area. Small grocery stores stock imported products from Canada, and many restaurants serve clientele who speak both English and French.
Broward County Transit runs regular bus routes through the area, and a free community shuttle connects residents to nearby spots. The beach is easy to reach via the parallel main roads, and most shops and restaurants cluster along a few central corridors.
Gulfstream Park, opened in 1939, houses the Garden of Champions with plaques honoring accomplished Thoroughbred horses from racing history. The venue sits right on the border with Aventura and draws thousands of visitors each year to race days and special events.
