Old Town, human settlement in Florida, United States of America
Old Town is a small unincorporated community in Dixie County, Florida, located along the Suwannee River near U.S. Route 19. It consists of simple homes, local shops, and a quiet rural landscape with low unemployment rates and affordable living costs.
Old Town was once a large Creek village and later became known as Bowlegs Town, named after Seminole chief Bolek. In 1818, the area was affected by Andrew Jackson's military campaign, when British subject Robert Armbister was captured and executed there.
Old Town was founded by Creek people and retained its name Suwannee Old Town. Residents maintain a strong connection to the river landscape today, using the Suwannee River for fishing, boating, and daily activities.
Old Town sits on U.S. Route 19 and State Road 349 and is easy to reach, about 40 miles from Gainesville and 12 miles from Chiefland. The area has warm and humid weather with rainfall from June through September, and there is a local urgent-care center and schools operating under the Dixie District Schools system.
Guy Louis Gabaldon, a decorated World War II hero, retired to Old Town and lived there until his death. Also, the sunken ship City of Hawkinsville in the Suwannee River is a fascinating historical feature that visitors can still see today.
