Sunrise is a residential city in Broward County, Florida, covering 30 square kilometers (11.6 square miles) across the central-western part of the county. The city holds nearly 100,000 residents and sits between the larger coastal cities and the Everglades to the west.
The settlement began in 1961 as Sunrise Golf Village after Norman Johnson purchased a large tract of land to build a retirement community. Over the following decades, the area grew into a self-contained city with residential neighborhoods and commercial centers.
Amerant Bank Arena is home to the Florida Panthers and draws hockey fans along with visitors attending concerts and shows. The venue shapes public life in town and serves as a gathering point for regional events of different kinds.
