Developer Herbert Sadkin founded the city in 1959 and promoted the first houses using models that had been shown in a New York department store and even in Moscow. Over the following decades, the community transformed from a retirement settlement into a diverse residential city.
The name combines Fort Lauderdale with the English word for hill, even though the area is completely flat. Today the neighborhoods show houses in different architectural styles that reflect how the population has changed over the decades.
Several main roads cross the city and provide access to neighboring communities and highways, making it easy to find your way around. Public facilities like libraries and community centers are scattered across the residential areas and serve as gathering points for residents.
Central Broward Park hosted a cricket match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in 2010, making it the first international cricket game between full members of the world cricket council on American soil. The city is also named after nearby Fort Lauderdale, even though it never had a military post or a hill of its own.
