The facility opened in 1958 and became a major event venue for Miami Beach. A comprehensive redesign between 2015 and 2018 fully modernized the building and transformed it into a contemporary event space.

The center sits in central South Beach, inland from the oceanfront, with the Fillmore Miami Beach auditorium forming part of the same complex. In 1964 the center hosted the Sonny Liston vs. Cassius Clay heavyweight title fight, where Clay, later Muhammad Ali, won the championship. The venue also staged Floyd Patterson vs. Ingemar Johansson III in 1961.
