Dunbar Village, Public housing development in West Palm Beach, Florida

Dunbar Village is a residential community in West Palm Beach containing 246 housing units arranged in parallel blocks near North Tamarind Avenue. The layout creates an organized neighborhood structure designed to house families in a concentrated area.

This residential development was constructed between 1939 and 1940 as one of Florida's first public housing projects created following the federal Housing Act of 1937. It was built as part of a national effort to provide affordable housing during that era.

This housing community is named after Paul Laurence Dunbar, an influential African American poet whose work shaped late 19th and early 20th century literature. The name reflects the historical importance of his contributions to African American cultural life.

The site is managed by the West Palm Beach Housing Authority and features security gates around the property. Keep in mind this is an active residential community where residents live, so respect for privacy is important.

The neighborhood follows a layout based on military barracks design, similar to other early public housing projects built across Florida at the same time. This approach to organization was common for residential communities in that era.
