University of Central Florida, Public research university in Orange County, United States
The University of Central Florida is a public research institution in Orange County focused on science, engineering, and health. The grounds spread across more than 1,400 acres (about 570 hectares) with circular paths connecting different colleges, laboratories, and facilities.
The institution opened in 1963 as Florida Technological University to support science and engineering for the space program. The name changed to its current form in 1978 as the focus expanded and more fields of study were added.
Students from across the country and around the world meet in hundreds of clubs and groups that shape life on campus. These organizations turn open spaces and buildings into places for discussion, projects, and shared activities that go beyond the classroom.
The main grounds are open to visitors who can walk the paths and use public areas. The Health Sciences Campus and Rosen College for hospitality management are located off the central site and require additional planning to reach.
The central Reflecting Pond serves as a gathering spot for the annual Spirit Splash event where thousands jump into the water. This ritual marks the start of Homecoming week and connects generations of alumni with new students.
