Rosenberg Brothers Department Store, historic building in Albany, Georgia, United States
The Rosenberg Brothers Department Store is a three-story department store built in Renaissance Revival style in downtown Albany, Georgia. Designed by architects J. C. Hind and J. T. Murphy in 1924, it features large round-arched openings, limestone trim around the arches, flat pilasters, and a decorative cornice running along the roofline.
Jacob Rosenberg opened his first store in Troy, Alabama, in 1894 and moved to Albany two years later to expand in the growing city. The current building was constructed in two phases between 1923 and 1924 to allow the business to continue operating during construction, before the downtown location closed in 1978.
The store served as a gathering place and shopping destination for the community across generations. It represents an era when department stores were central landmarks in downtown life, though the family also enforced segregation policies during that period.
The building is located in downtown Albany and is easy to spot when walking through the city center due to its size and architectural style. Visitors can view and appreciate the exterior details, round arches, and brickwork from the street.
The building was constructed in two phases between 1923 and 1924 so the store could continue serving customers during construction. After closing in 1978, it was leased to the Albany Herald newspaper in 1986 and served as their office until the paper relocated in 2020.
