Lowndes County Historical Society Museum, Carnegie library and history museum in Valdosta, Georgia, US

The Lowndes County Historical Society Museum is a Carnegie library building turned history museum in Valdosta, Georgia, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The brick building has a traditional design with a small set of stairs at the entrance and large windows, and inside it holds photographs, documents, artifacts, and displays covering the story of the region.

The building was originally funded by Andrew Carnegie, the industrialist who financed hundreds of public libraries across the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1967, the Lowndes County Historical Society took it over and turned it into the museum it is today.

The museum hosts community events throughout the year, from book signings to meetings of local civic groups, so it still functions as a gathering place much like the library it once was. This continuity between past and present use gives the building a lived-in feeling that many history museums lack.

The museum is open only on certain days of the week, so it is worth checking the current hours before you go. Admission is free, and the surrounding neighborhood in Valdosta is easy to walk around after your visit.

The museum holds one of the most complete collections in the world about Doc Holliday, the famous gunfighter of the American West, who grew up in Valdosta. Visitors who know him only from films are often surprised to find such a strong connection between his story and this small Georgia city.
