Piedmont, Geographic plateau region in Eastern United States

Piedmont is a geographic region in the Eastern United States that stretches between the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic Coastal Plain, forming a rolling plateau. The landscape transitions from lower elevations near the coast to higher areas inland.

This region formed through several major geological events, including mountain-building processes during the formation of an ancient supercontinent hundreds of millions of years ago. These forces created the basic structure of the landscape visible today.

A distinctive music tradition developed in the region during the late 1800s, blending blues with elements from local folk and country styles. This sound remains part of the area's cultural identity today.

This region is accessible from many areas since it covers a large territory crossed by various transportation routes. Exploring the area is best done by vehicle to fully experience the varied landscape and different communities.

Where rivers shift from hard rock in the western mountains to softer stone in the eastern plains, powerful waterfalls and rapids form along a distinct line. This natural boundary has long served as a transition point for settlements and human activity.
