Kingston Saltpeter Cave, Protected cave system in Bartow County, Georgia, US
Kingston Saltpeter Cave is a protected cave system in Georgia featuring natural rock formations and interconnected passages underground. The site sits within hardwood forest and contains multiple chambers with different geological features throughout.
The Confederate army mined saltpeter from this cave during the American Civil War to produce gunpowder for weapons. Federal forces destroyed the mining operations in 1864, ending this military production effort.
The cave shows signs of habitation by Native peoples who spent time here gathering resources and leaving traces of their activities. Walking through the passages, you can spot evidence of how these earlier inhabitants used this space.
Entry is controlled by a speleological organization that requires advance permission and adherence to safety rules before entering. Visitors should bring proper clothing and lighting since underground conditions are cool and dark year-round.
The cave preserves fossils of more than 150 extinct animal species, including mammoth and passenger pigeon remains from the Ice Age. This makes the site an important window into ancient ecosystems that once thrived in this region.
