Panola Mountain, Nature park in Stonecrest, United States.
Panola Mountain is a nature park near Atlanta featuring a roughly 100-acre granite outcrop spreading across 1,635 acres in total. The area contains two lakes, extensive forests, and streams that flow through surrounding natural meadows.
The state of Georgia acquired the land in 1974, and it includes Vaughters' Barn, a structure documenting the agricultural past of DeKalb County. The region was once a major center for dairy farming and cattle raising.
Trappist monks occupied this land during one period, leaving their mark on the place through their monastic practices. The site reflects the presence of earlier inhabitants and workers who lived and labored here across different generations.
Visitors need to book in advance for ranger-led hikes in order to properly explore the mountain and its trails. The Nature Center provides information and equipment rentals to support your outdoor activities.
The granite outcrop hosts specialized plant species that have adapted to survival on bare rock surfaces and exist only in this Georgia Piedmont Region. These rare plants shape the mountain's ecological character and make it botanically significant.
