Lawrenceville, County seat in Gwinnett County, Georgia, United States
Lawrenceville is the county seat in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and spreads across several neighborhoods with government facilities, commercial zones, and residential areas. The city sits about 1,065 feet (325 m) above sea level northeast of Atlanta, linking older structures in the center with newer districts on the edges.
The settlement was founded in 1821 as the administrative center for the newly created Gwinnett County and grew with the arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th century. The site remained a hub for trade and governance across the region for decades.
The downtown core preserves brick and timber structures where residents gather along the streets surrounding the old courthouse for shopping and local events. Cafés and small shops occupy the restored facades, creating spaces where people meet and linger.
Most county offices and services are located in the government building near the center, where visitors find parking areas and walkways connecting the different offices. People arriving by road can use the main streets that pass through the center and should expect typical suburban traffic during peak hours.
The name honors James Lawrence, a naval officer from the War of 1812 who became known for his command "Don't give up the ship." This phrase later turned into a rallying cry remembered far beyond the military context.
