Whitehall Street Retail Historic District
Whitehall Street Retail Historic District, Commercial historic district in downtown Atlanta, United States.
The district spans multiple blocks around Peachtree Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, containing retail buildings from different architectural periods.
The area emerged as a commercial center in the 1840s when railroad tracks reached Atlanta, leading to rapid development and construction.
During the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, the district became a focal point for student sit-ins and demonstrations against segregated establishments.
The district maintains its original street grid layout from 1846, with Broad Street added in 1865 to accommodate increased commercial activity.
The clock outside Rich's department store served as a central meeting point for Atlanta residents throughout the twentieth century.
