Colonsay Plantation
Colonsay Plantation, Historic plantation in Taliaferro County, United States
Colonsay Plantation is a two-story residence in Taliaferro County built with hand-hewn beams and wooden pegs connecting the frame throughout. The structure maintains its original form and remains occupied today.
The house was built in 1789 by Marmaduke Mendenhall on land granted during the period of British colonial rule. The property dates to this early founding era of the American South.
The main house displays colonial-era craftsmanship through virgin pine paneling and traditional joinery methods. The way rooms are arranged reflects how plantation residents lived and worked during that period.
The property sits east of Crawfordville along State Route 908 and can be viewed from the road. Keep in mind this is a private residence currently occupied, so respect for residents should be maintained.
The house contains a distinctive winding staircase that forms a semicircle at about eight feet high. This unusual design shows how builders solved space challenges inside the home with creative carpentry.
