Savannah College of Art and Design, Private university for art and design in Savannah, United States.
Savannah College of Art and Design is a private school for art and design in Savannah, Georgia, with branches also in Atlanta and in Lacoste, southern France. More than 67 restored historic buildings across downtown house studios, lecture halls, galleries, and dormitories connected by green walkways and active streets.
Richard Rowan and Paula Wallace founded the school in 1978 with 71 students in a restored 19th-century poorhouse. In the decades after, the institution bought and restored more historic buildings and extended its presence to Atlanta and Europe.
The institution takes its name from its Georgia hometown and promotes a study model that links creative skills with career preparation. Visitors can see through public exhibitions and events how much the school shapes the cultural life of the city.
Several publicly accessible galleries and spaces sit scattered across downtown, so visitors should check ahead for current exhibitions and events. The campus is best explored on foot, as many buildings are only a few blocks apart.
The school runs its own museum of contemporary art in a converted railway building near the river, which is open to visitors unconnected with study programs. Much of the preserved old architecture in downtown owes its current use to restoration projects led by this institution.
