Aiken State Park, State park in Windsor, South Carolina
Aiken State Park is a natural area with four spring-fed lakes surrounded by forests in South Carolina. The park contains swampy sections, hardwood bottomlands, and sandy pine forests connected by trails and waterways for boating.
The park was built in 1934 during the Great Depression as part of a major job creation program. Workers from different backgrounds, including African American crews, constructed the entire site with basic tools and engineering methods.
The park contains original structures from the 1930s that show how workers of that era built and designed public spaces. Visitors can observe these buildings while walking through the grounds today.
The park is easiest to explore by spending time on different activities like hiking, fishing, and boating on the lakes. Check ahead about facility availability and equipment options before your visit to make the most of your time there.
A natural artesian well next to a paddling trail provides fresh drinking water for visitors during their explorations. This water source proves especially helpful for people on longer hikes and kayak trips.
