Rockton and Rion Railroad Historic District

The Rockton and Rion Railroad Historic District spans 150 acres, containing forty buildings and six structures connected to granite quarrying operations in South Carolina.

From 1883 to 1945, the railroad system transported Winnsboro blue granite from local quarries, supporting industrial development throughout Fairfield County.

The district includes the Anderson and Rion Quarry sites, industrial structures, management residences, and a 1941 school building made entirely of local granite.

The district extends along a twelve-mile stretch of railroad track, with most structures constructed between the late 1920s and late 1930s.

Two preserved steam locomotives remain on the original rail line, demonstrating the transportation methods used for moving granite during the industrial period.
