Capitol Center, Modern skyscraper in Columbia, United States
Capitol Center is a modern skyscraper with 25 floors located in downtown Columbia, South Carolina. Its exterior features tinted glass and aluminum panels, with interiors housing office space for state agencies.
The building was completed in 1987, replacing the Wade Hampton Hotel that previously stood on the site. At that time, it became the tallest structure in South Carolina, with AT&T as its first major tenant.
The Capital City Club on the top floor serves as a gathering place for business leaders and state officials. You will notice how the building has become central to Columbia's professional and political circles.
The building has an attached parking facility with space for more than 1000 vehicles. Visitors can easily drive up and find parking to access the offices and facilities inside.
The building's construction sparked political debate in 1986 when it became a focal point for concerns about government spending in South Carolina. The controversy reflects how strongly the project influenced public discussion at the time.
