Guignard Brick Works, Industrial heritage site in Cayce, South Carolina.
Guignard Brick Works is a historic factory in Cayce featuring four circular beehive-style kilns, an old office building, and scattered industrial structures across about 3.5 acres. Three of the kilns date from the early 1900s, with a fourth kiln added later to replace one destroyed by fire.
The Guignard family started brick production here in 1801 using clay from nearby riverbanks to make building materials. Over the following 100 years the factory expanded and supplied bricks to major structures throughout the region.
The works shaped brick-making traditions across the region and employed many local families whose descendants still recall the trade. The site reflects how industrial production became woven into the community's memory and sense of place.
Wear sturdy shoes as the grounds are uneven and some historic structures may be difficult to access. Check with local visitor services beforehand since access can change depending on weather and maintenance schedules.
The facility showcases an uncommon collection of kilns that shifted from wood to coal to gas heating over its history, making it one of the few places where visitors can see this technical evolution firsthand. Each kiln's design reflects the energy source and methods available during its construction period.
