USS Clamagore, Submarine in South Carolina
USS Clamagore (SS-343) is a Balao-class submarine preserved as a museum ship at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant. The vessel was modernized after the war and features the technological improvements of the GUPPY III retrofit program.
The submarine was commissioned in 1945 and saw service in the final months of World War II. After the war it was decommissioned, later reactivated, and underwent major modernization that kept it operational into the 1970s.
The vessel bears the name of a type of parrotfish and represents an important phase in submarine development after World War II. Visitors can see how the technology of this era actually worked and what conditions the crew had to endure.
The museum is located in Mount Pleasant and is easily accessible by car with parking available on-site. Plan for several hours to explore the entire vessel, and be aware that it has narrow corridors and tight staircases.
This is the only GUPPY III-class submarine preserved in the United States, offering a rare chance to see these specialized modernizations firsthand. The post-war conversions show how the Navy adapted older technology for the Cold War era.
