Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, United States Air Force base located near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Myrtle Beach Air Force Base is a military airfield in South Carolina now open to visitors as a park featuring historic aircraft. The site displays fighter planes such as the A-10 Warthog and other aircraft that once served in Air Force operations.
The base began as a small airport in the 1930s and became a pilot training center during World War II. After the war, the Air Force reopened it in 1956 as a Cold War facility until its closure in 1993.
The park honors the pilots and soldiers who served at the former air base. The aircraft on display and memorials show how the local community preserves and respects its military past.
The park is open from sunrise to sunset daily and free to visit. Access is straightforward from Highway 17 Business, and covered pavilions are available for rent if you need a shaded area.
During World War II, over 600 German prisoners of war were held here, and many settled in the area afterward and started families. President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited the base in 1944 to finalize plans for the D-Day invasion.
