Bean Hollow State Beach, State beach in San Mateo County, California.
Bean Hollow State Beach features two small coves separated by rocky outcrops and linked by a walking trail along the coast. The area provides parking, picnic spots, and facilities for daytime visitors.
The area was originally home to the Quiroste, an Ohlone-speaking group, and received the name Arroyo de Los Frijoles when it became part of Rancho Butano in 1838. This name refers to beans that grew in the region.
The beach hosts interpretive displays about ocean life and offers educational programs for school groups exploring coastal ecosystems. Visitors encounter information about the variety of creatures living in tidal zones.
The beach is open from 8 am until sunset with free parking and chemical toilets available. Picnic areas with barbecue grills are provided for visitor use.
The rocks display tafoni formations creating honeycomb patterns, while tide pools contain sea anemones, urchins, and crabs. These pools are easy to explore at low tide.
