Fort Hunter Liggett, Military training fort in Monterey County, United States.
Fort Hunter Liggett is a military installation in Monterey County that spreads across diverse landscapes with mountains, valleys, and forests. The grounds feature specialized training areas and operate as an active military facility.
The United States Army established this installation in 1940 on land acquired from William Randolph Hearst. Its creation was driven by the need to support military training during World War II.
The installation houses historic structures, including the 1930 Hacienda that now serves as lodging for visitors and brings a civilian touch to the base. This building shapes daily activity on the grounds and shows how military and private uses coexist here.
Visitors need advance permission and security clearance to enter the military installation and explore the grounds. Strict access protocols are in place and must be followed.
The grounds contain 33 aircraft drop zones and parachute areas used for large-scale air operations. These facilities make it one of the few training sites equipped in this comprehensive way.
