Leaning Pine Arboretum, Mediterranean botanical garden at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, United States.
Leaning Pine Arboretum is a botanical garden on the Cal Poly campus spanning about five acres and displaying plants from five Mediterranean climate regions around the world. The different sections are organized by their geographic regions of origin, including Australia, South Africa, Chile, California, and traditional Mediterranean areas.
The arboretum developed over more than 50 years through student projects built on Cal Poly's teaching principles. The collection grew gradually as successive generations of students expanded the gardens and added new sections over time.
The name comes from a distinctive leaning pine tree that marks the property. Students work actively throughout the different garden sections, which serve as outdoor classrooms where visitors can observe hands-on learning in action.
The arboretum is accessible most weekdays with no entrance fee, though campus parking may require permits. Morning visits are often the best time to see the plants clearly and enjoy the space with fewer people around.
The grounds feature specialized areas like the Primitive Garden with ancient plant species and a Formal Garden with geometric patterns and tiered fountains. These contrasts show different garden design philosophies and offer visitors varied impressions of gardening styles.
