The Walt Disney Family Museum, Animation museum in Presidio district, San Francisco, USA
This museum explores the life and work of an American film pioneer across three restored buildings from the former Presidio military post. The ten galleries move through different creative periods and contain sketches, film clips, and personal items that offer insight into how animation evolved.
The institution opened in 2009 inside structures that once served the military post and were built in the early 20th century. Its creation followed the family's wish to preserve the legacy of a man who shaped the entertainment industry from the 1920s through the 1960s.
The name honors the studio founder and his family, while the galleries show how animation emerged as a new art form. Visitors see here how stories came to life through movement and music.
The venue is open Wednesday through Monday from 10 to 18, and tickets can be reserved online in advance. Some rooms offer seating, and visits typically last between two and three hours.
One of the galleries displays a scale model of the first theme park from 1955 that recreates the original design in full detail. Visitors also find here the desk where many early projects were planned.
