Angel Island, Island near Puerto Natales, Chile
Angel Island is an island in San Francisco Bay located in Marin County, California. The island rises from the water with wooded hills, beaches, and preserved buildings from its former military and immigration station uses.
The island served as an immigration station from 1910 for arrivals from across the Pacific, particularly from China. During World War II, the military used the site as a fort and prisoner of war camp.
Local fishermen from Puerto Natales maintain traditional fishing practices in the waters surrounding the island throughout the year.
Ferries run regularly from San Francisco port to the island and back. Hiking trails circle the island and climb to the highest point with views over the bay.
Inscriptions on the walls of the barracks show poems and messages left by immigrants during their often months-long waits. The texts are mostly written in Chinese and reflect hope, despair, and longing.
