Sutro Heights Park, Public park in Outer Richmond District, San Francisco, United States.
Sutro Heights Park is a public park in the Outer Richmond District with terraced gardens and concrete replicas of classical statues overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Ocean Beach. The grounds span roughly 18 acres with winding paths that move through different levels of vegetation.
Adolph Sutro founded this place in 1881, transforming undeveloped land into gardens with Italian-style landscaping, fountains, and a mansion. The estate's gardeners created a manicured oasis on the city's windswept hills.
The park displays reproductions of international sculptures, including replicas of the Lions from Trafalgar Square and the Huntress Diana. Today's visitors encounter these classical figures scattered throughout the terraced gardens.
The park can be entered through multiple access points, with street parking available along 48th Avenue and Point Lobos Avenue. The paths are straightforward to navigate, but the terrain has several slopes, so visitors should bring comfortable shoes.
A concrete observation platform offers views of the Cliff House, Seal Rocks, and the entire stretch of Ocean Beach below. This viewing spot was part of Sutro's original design and remains a favored location for photography and watching the coastline.
