The Old Customhouse features Mediterranean Revival architecture with stucco walls, red clay roof tiles, and large wooden doors facing the harbor entrance.
Thomas O. Larkin designed this structure during Mexican rule, making it the first government building constructed in California to process maritime trade and immigration.
The customs house walls display numerous artifacts from Spanish and Mexican periods, including traditional tools, furniture, documents, and maritime navigation instruments.
The building opens for self-guided tours from Thursday through Sunday between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, with parking available at the nearby waterfront lot.
The structure maintains its original 1827 foundation stones, exterior walls, and internal wooden beams, marking the longest-standing government building in California.
