Monterey State Beach

Monterey State Beach is a sandy shoreline along Monterey Bay extending through multiple sections with numerous access points. The shore connects several communities and provides parking and facilities at various locations along its length.

This coastal area was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years before Spanish colonists founded the first European settlement in Monterey in 1770. That early colonial period shaped the development of the entire region.

The northern section serves as a launch area for paragliders who take advantage of coastal wind patterns. The southern parts provide sheltered zones that attract scuba divers seeking calmer underwater conditions.
