Monterey State Beach is a sandy shoreline along Monterey Bay extending through multiple sections with numerous access points. The shore connects several communities and provides parking and facilities at various locations along its length.

This coastal area was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years before Spanish colonists founded the first European settlement in Monterey in 1770. That early colonial period shaped the development of the entire region.

Surf fishing is permitted along the beach, and the Seaside end is used as a launch spot for paragliders. The beach lies beside El Estero, a freshwater lake, and runs from the city of Monterey to Seaside.

The shore is easily accessible from parking areas located at multiple entry points along its length. Basic facilities like restrooms, picnic areas, and seating are available at most locations, though spaces may fill up during busy summer periods.

The Seaside end of the beach is a launch spot for paragliders, and surf fishing is permitted along the shore. The beach lies on southern Monterey Bay, with El Estero pond behind it and Jacks Peak rising about 4.3 km inland.
