Portuguese Historical Museum

The Portuguese Historical Museum is housed in a reconstructed chapel building that occupies two floors with exhibitions about Portuguese heritage and immigration. The galleries display artifacts, documents, and photographs that document the experiences of Portuguese settlers in California.

The building takes inspiration from the first permanent império chapel built in 1915 in San Jose's Portuguese neighborhood to serve the growing community. This structure marks an important moment in the history of Portuguese immigration to California's coast.

The museum displays religious objects and celebrates the customs that shaped the Portuguese community, allowing visitors to see how faith and tradition remained central to their lives. These exhibitions reveal how the spiritual practices of Portuguese settlers continue to be honored and remembered in the region.

The museum is located within History Park alongside other historic buildings and reconstructions that shape the surroundings. A visit can easily be combined with exploring nearby sites, as the entire grounds are walkable.

The surrounding plaza features two reconstructed bandstands and a Rosa dos Ventos compass rose crafted by Portuguese artisans. These details show how traditional Portuguese architectural elements were intentionally woven into the site's modern design.
