Morgan Hill, City in Santa Clara County, California
This place sits between the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Diablo Range, covering roughly 33 square kilometers (13 square miles). The layout mixes residential neighborhoods with agricultural land, parks and recreation centers scattered throughout.
The area began as a Mexican land grant before passing into the hands of Irish immigrants in the mid-1800s. A railroad line in the late 1800s turned the settlement into a trading hub.
The name comes from Hiram Morgan Hill, a 19th-century rancher and businessman whose estate shaped the area. Today you can still see the agricultural influence in the wineries and orchards that surround the downtown core.
The Centennial Recreation Center offers fitness classes, pools and wellness programs open to visitors with day passes available. Most parks stay open from dawn until evening and provide walking paths or picnic spots.
One of the oldest wineries in the Santa Clara Valley was founded here in the 1860s and still operates today. You can spot a few historic ranch houses dating back to the pre-town era scattered around the outskirts.
