Union City, Suburban city in San Francisco Bay Area, United States.
Union City is a suburb in Alameda County that lies between Oakland and San Jose, encompassing several residential neighborhoods, shopping centers, and commercial areas. Alameda Creek runs through the western end of the city and forms a natural boundary, while the hills to the east separate the flatlands from the backcountry.
The city formed in 1959 through the merger of Alvarado and Decoto, two older settlements with separate histories. Alvarado served briefly as the county seat in the 19th century before that role moved to Oakland.
Many residents speak Tagalog, Hindi, or Spanish at home, which is visible in the city's restaurants, shops, and community centers. Neighborhoods show a mix of single-family homes and apartment complexes spreading along wide streets, while parks and playgrounds serve as gathering spots for families.
Visitors arriving by public transport will find several bus lines and a BART station offering connections to other parts of the Bay Area. The city works as a starting point for trips to Oakland, San Jose, or the surrounding hills, as routes are generally well developed.
The first successful sugar beet processing facilities in the United States opened here in the late 19th century and shaped the region's economy for several decades. Today, only a few building remnants and historical markers recall this industrial past.
