Burlingame, Suburban city in San Mateo County, California.
Burlingame is a city in San Mateo County, California, located on the San Francisco Peninsula along the bay shoreline. The town spreads between two main commercial streets and runs parallel to the Caltrain rail corridor that connects it to neighboring communities.
The area was part of Rancho San Mateo starting in 1846 and later developed by William Davis Merry Howard, who planted eucalyptus trees across the land. The town incorporated in 1908 and took its name from American diplomat Anson Burlingame.
The Kohl Mansion, constructed in 1914, represents early 20th-century architecture and currently functions as part of Mercy High School campus.
The city connects to San Francisco via three highways and the Caltrain rail line, with two main shopping districts along Burlingame Avenue and Broadway. Visitors can walk between both areas and find restaurants and stores within a short distance from the train station.
In 2018 the town unveiled a ceremonial bust honoring its namesake Anson Burlingame on the 150th anniversary of the treaty between the United States and China. The diplomat had played a key role in relations between both countries during the 19th century.
