Kohl Mansion, Tudor Revival estate in Burlingame, United States.
Kohl Mansion is a three-story house built in the English Tudor Revival style on a large property in Burlingame, California. The grounds include a rose garden, tennis courts, and a separate carriage house that was part of the original layout.
Charles Frederick Kohl, a wealthy businessman, had the house built in 1914 as a family home for himself and his wife Bessie. In 1982, the property was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its historic value.
The Sisters of Mercy took over the property in the 1930s and turned it into a school for girls, a role it has kept ever since. Visitors who walk through the grounds can still see how the rooms and courtyards were arranged to serve a school rather than a private family.
The property is in a residential part of Burlingame, so arriving by car or on foot is the easiest way to get there. Walking the full grounds takes some time, so wearing comfortable shoes helps you make the most of the visit.
In 1921, the property was used as a filming location for a silent film, years before the Sisters of Mercy arrived. Few visitors are aware of this short connection to early Hollywood production.
