Morgan Territory Regional Preserve, Regional park in Contra Costa County, California, United States.
Morgan Territory Regional Preserve is a regional park in Contra Costa County, California, covering rolling sandstone hills with a network of trails. The landscape connects to Mount Diablo State Park and features varied elevations and open terrain.
Jeremiah Morgan established a ranch on this land in 1857, using it for agricultural purposes during the nineteenth century. The East Bay Regional Park District acquired the property in 1975 and transformed it into protected public parkland.
The Volvon people, who spoke the Bay Miwok dialect, lived across these rolling hills and developed a deep knowledge of the local environment. Today, traces of their presence can be felt as you move through the landscape on the various trails.
The preserve is open during daylight hours throughout the year and welcomes hikers, horseback riders, and campers on designated sites. Visitors should prepare for uneven terrain and bring adequate water and shade during warm seasons.
The preserve is home to the Diablo sunflower, a rare plant species that grows only in the foothills of Mount Diablo. This delicate native flower is one of the reasons the land has been carefully protected for future generations.
