Ione

Ione is a town in Amador County located in a valley at about 91 meters elevation, with agricultural lands defining much of its character. Oak trees line the landscape, particularly in the western section, giving the area its rural appearance.

Founded in 1849 during the California Gold Rush, the town developed as a supply center for surrounding mining areas. Its name was chosen after a character from a novel, reflecting the literary interests of early settlers.

The annual Homecoming festival in early May brings residents together to celebrate the town's roots, which are tied to the establishment of a Methodist Church in the 1800s. This gathering shows how the community keeps its history alive and values its connections.

The Preston School of Industry was built in 1890 and operated as a juvenile rehabilitation facility until 1960 on expansive grounds. This historic building is now a California Historical Landmark and stands as a reminder of a distinctive chapter in the state's past.
