The Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge includes grasslands, freshwater marshes, mudflats, and open water areas along the California North Coast.
The refuge was established to safeguard wetland habitats vital for migratory water birds traversing the Pacific Flyway migration route.
Over 200 bird species frequent the refuge, attracting researchers and nature enthusiasts who observe and document the diverse avian populations.
Visitors access two main walking paths: the 1.75-mile Shorebird Loop Trail and the 1.5-mile Hookton Slough Trail, open daily from 8 AM.
Between late January and early April, more than 20,000 Aleutian cackling geese roost in the refuge grasslands during their migration period.
