Susanville is the county seat of Lassen County in northeastern California and sits near the junction of major transport routes. The town extends along the edge of Honey Lake Valley at 1,276 meters elevation and is framed by forested hills.
The settlement was originally called Rooptown and received its current name in 1857 to honor Susan Roop, daughter of pioneer Isaac Roop. The place developed as a trading and supply point for ranchers and timber workers across the region.
