Hillcrest Youth Correctional Facility, Juvenile correctional facility in Salem, Oregon.
Hillcrest Youth Correctional Facility was a juvenile detention center in Salem that spread across multiple buildings containing classrooms, administrative offices, and an educational center. The grounds accommodated several hundred residents across separate building complexes.
The institution opened in 1914 as a school for girls and operated for more than 100 years. It closed in 2017 when residents were transferred to another facility.
The grounds display design features of early educational architecture, with buildings arranged like a traditional campus layout. The separation of structures created distinct zones for different functions, similar to boarding schools from that era.
The grounds are not currently open to public visits as they remain under state control. Information about possible future uses can be requested from local authorities.
The facility changed its population multiple times: it started with only girls, later admitted boys, and eventually became exclusively for boys. These shifts left traces in various architectural additions made to the grounds over time.
