Holman State Wayside, State park in Polk County, Oregon
Holman State Wayside is a wooded park located at the base of Eola Hills in Polk County. The property features Douglas firs, Oregon white oaks, and bigleaf maple trees throughout its forested setting.
Thomas and Cora Holman opened their property to the public in 1922 to access a natural spring, leading the state to eventually acquire the land. The site was preserved as a state park to protect this water source and the surrounding forest.
The natural spring played an essential role for early settlers who used the water source for livestock and drinking purposes.
The park has been closed to vehicles since 2007 but remains accessible to pedestrians and cyclists exploring its walking trails. Visitors should plan accordingly for foot or bicycle access only.
The property contains a natural spring that has flowed since pioneer times and continues to supply the wayside today. This water source motivated the Holmans to share their land with visitors in the first place.
