Oregon State Penitentiary

Oregon State Penitentiary is a maximum security facility in Salem with multiple cell blocks housing two inmates per room, surrounded by concrete walls that enclose the sprawling grounds. The complex contains industrial workshops where inmates work in furniture production, laundry operations, and metalworking.

The facility was originally established in Portland in 1851 and moved to Salem in 1866 as Oregon's growing population led to expansion of its criminal justice system. The relocation reflected the state's need for larger-capacity corrections infrastructure.

Inside the facility, inmates gather in clubs organized by background or interest, such as the 7th Step Club and ethnically focused groups that help people maintain connections and a sense of community. These gatherings shape social life within the walls.

Until 2022, this facility housed Oregon's only death row and execution chamber, making it central to the state's capital punishment history until the governor commuted all death sentences to life without parole. The removal of these functions marked a significant change in the prison's role.
