The Portland Aquarium occupied a 12,500-square-foot leased former steakhouse in Oak Grove, Oregon, with a low blue-panelled roof and tan triangular sections above a flat blue awning. Inside were 30 exhibits holding more than 2,500 species, from sharks and stingrays to a giant Pacific octopus, jellyfish, cold-water Oregon Coast fish and a rainforest room with tree frogs, lizards and lorikeets.

The Portland Aquarium opened on December 15, 2012, in a leased former steakhouse in Oak Grove, built with investment-group funding and first proposed as the "Oregon Aquarium." It closed on February 16, 2016, and its animals were sent to other aquariums in the chain or sold to third parties. Co-founder Ammon Covino was arrested in 2013 over illegal marine-animal harvesting and later imprisoned.

The aquarium lets visitors interact directly with marine animals and learn about where these creatures live in the wild. These hands-on experiences make ocean life feel real and relevant to people of all ages.
