The Marylhurst Art Gym, Contemporary art gallery in Marylhurst, Oregon.

The Marylhurst Art Gym was a nonprofit, noncollecting contemporary art gallery on the third floor of Marylhurst University's B.P. John Administrative Building, in space that had previously served as the campus gymnasium and theater. It covered 2,700 square feet and focused on Pacific Northwest art through retrospectives, mid-career surveys and large-scale exhibitions. It closed with the university in 2018.

The Art Gym was founded in 1980 by Marylhurst University art faculty Kay Slusarenko, Paul Sutinen and Terri Hopkins, who raised $1,500 through a banquet and cookie sale to open the 2,700-square-foot gallery. Terri Hopkins served as director until 2013, followed by Blake Shell and Ashley Stull Meyers. When Marylhurst closed in 2018, the gallery's archives, catalogs, trademarks and website transferred to the Crumpacker Library at the Portland Art Museum.

The gallery provides a platform for regional artists to show their work and gain visibility within the contemporary art community. Visitors experience the living art scene of the Pacific Northwest through the exhibitions presented here.

The gallery closed with Marylhurst University at the end of 2018, so there is nothing to visit on the Marylhurst campus. Its archives, including exhibition catalogs, historical documents, trademarks and website, are held at the Crumpacker Library at the Portland Art Museum. Look for the collection there rather than in Oregon's former gymnasium space.

The building was originally a functioning gymnasium with actual sports facilities before being transformed into an exhibition space. This conversion from a training facility to an art venue remains a defining characteristic of the place.
