Berry Botanic Garden
Berry Botanic Garden, Botanical garden in southwest Portland, Oregon.
The Berry Botanic Garden is a botanical garden in southwest Portland that covers about 6.5 acres with diverse plant collections. The grounds feature rock gardens, rhododendrons, primulas, and lilies arranged throughout different sections of the property.
The garden was established in 1938 by Rae Selling Berry, who developed it as a center for plant conservation. It later became a nonprofit organization in 1978 and received listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
The garden reflects a deep commitment to preserving rare and native plants that grow in the Pacific Northwest region. Visitors today can see how this mission shaped the design and plant selections throughout the grounds.
The garden has accessible pathways through different plant sections and can accommodate visitors with varying mobility levels. It is wise to wear appropriate footwear since the terrain is hilly and paths can be slippery during wet weather.
The garden developed specialized primrose varieties such as Snow Lady and Purple Spark that were cultivated within the property. These breeding achievements demonstrate long-standing expertise in working with challenging alpine and rare plants.
