Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge, Wildlife refuge on Columbia River estuary between Oregon and Washington, United States.

Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area that spreads across tidal marshes, mudflats, and waterways along the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington. The landscape consists of a mosaic of islands, channels, and wetlands that shift constantly with the tides.

The refuge was established in 1972 to preserve essential habitats for migratory birds traveling the Pacific Flyway. Its creation was part of a broader effort to protect critical stopover points for waterfowl across the western coast.

The refuge represents a significant conservation area where visitors observe seasonal waterfowl migrations and participate in environmental education programs.

The area is best reached by boat, with multiple public launch sites available throughout the refuge. Hiking trails and viewing platforms allow you to observe wildlife and take photographs from the shore.

The refuge contains around twenty islands scattered throughout the estuary, connected by numerous channels that create constantly shifting habitats. This fragmented landscape creates unusual conditions where different bird species share distinct zones within the system.
